Chapter 1
It’s Tough Being What I Am
Era - late 1800’s
“Henri, come,” my older sister beckoned, using the nickname I hated. I was not a boy. My name was Henrietta Johanna Davidson and I intended to keep it that way. I sputtered her many angry words but made not a sound.
Why? I’m mute, and I speak using American Sign Language. I was born this way and I hated it. But it has taught me many things. I never spoke out of turn, becuase my pet tiger nearly ate me and being mute means you can hear - but can’t speak at all.
“Oh, fine, Henrietta it is. Hurry up, you snail!” she scolded me. Marianne made so mad! My face turned hot as I grew angrier.
“Henrietta, there’s no time to get mad,” mother scolded, holding baby James. “Come along now, dear.” I sighed, hitching up my long day dress and scurrying along.
My family (minus father. He died two months ago of some deadly disease I forget) hurried to get aboard the Sapphire.
